The new look opening partnership of Phil Salt and Tom Haines gave Sussex a bright start on the opening day of their crucial Specsavers County Championship division two match against Leicestershire at Hove.
After defeat on a difficult pitch at Lord’s third-placed Sussex picked an unchanged side – but pushed regular opener Luke Wells down to No 3.
After winning the toss Salt and Wells put on 79 at almost four runs an over. Salt, who scored 44 from 60 balls, with eight fours, was then well caught and bowled by Ben Mike, who is making his first-class debut.
Leicestershire, whose own promotion bid has faltered after defeats by Kent and Gloucestershire, were fielding weakened attack without the injured Gavin Griffiths and Zak Chappell.
Dieter Klein is playing his fourth championship match of the season, having not taken a wicket in his previous three.
But Mike looked impressive and made his breakthrough with an eye-catching return catch, low to his right, in his fourth over.
Sussex were 97-1 at lunch.
