Martin Montoya hopes to catch the eye of his old boss – and make an international breakthrough with Spain.

But Albion’s in-form right-back admits it will be “very difficult” to break into the senior set-up.

Spain are at Wembley tonight to play England in the new UEFA Nations League.

It is their first fixture under the guidance of Luis Enrique, who brought Montoya through at Barcelona B and was also his boss with the senior side at the Camp Nou.

Montoya was selected for the Spanish squad by Vicente Del Bosque and was on Julen Lopetegui’s initial longlist for this summer’s World Cup in Russia.

But he has yet to make his debut.

He told The Argus: “It’s really hard. Last year I was in the preliminary squad but, in the end, not selected.

“I know I was among the candidates to go as full-back.

“But we have got a lot of very good players “That is one thing I am always working towards, working hard and the future will tell you.”

Luis Enrique has used Cesar Azpilicueta of Chelsea and Dani Carvajal of Real Madrid in the right-back berth during training sessions this week.

Hector Bellerin of Arsenal and recent Madrid signing Alvaro Odriozaola are also rivals for a place with Barcelona's versatile Sergi Roberto also an option.

But Luis Enrique will be aware of Montoya’s solid start to Premier League life in his three matches so far.

Bruno will compete for the Albion right-back place when they return to action against Southampton a week on Monday.

The club captain is over the first hamstring injury of his long career and resumed training in the days immediately ahead of last Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Fulham.
