PAUL BARBER has described Albion’s latest off-field signing as “a massive coup” for the club.

Dan Ashworth, 47, will take over as technical director from an as yet unspecified date in spring after success in a similar role with the Football Association.

Ashworth has agreed to take the strategic position with the Seagulls after emerging as their outstanding candidate during a two-year hunt.

Albion are not paying compensation for Ashworth.

He is serving out a six-month notice as technical director at the FA, where he was involved in national team success at senior and age-group level.

Barber told The Argus: “We are delighted.

“He is probably one of the most respected and sought after technical directors in world football, and he is coming to Brighton and Hove Albion.

“I think that is a massive coup for us and great credit to the club.”

Ashworth’s role will primarily be involved with the sports science, academy and recruitment departments at the club. He also has a strong background in women’s football.

First team boss Chris Hughton will not report to him.

Barber said: “We are hearing it will be confusing or someone is going to leave or Chris Hughton didn’t know about it. Absolute nonsense!

“Everyone who will be directly reporting to Dan has been involved and they have all had chance to have a private meeting with me or Tony (Bloom, chairman) there.

“We wanted them to understand each other’s roles one-to-one, not with us steering the conversation.”
