ALBION’S heroic matchday medical staff have won a top award for saving five people’s lives at the Amex.

The five fans have each suffered cardiac arrest at the home of the Seagulls since the stadium opened in 2011 – and, miraculously, the medical team have save them all from dying.

The chances of one person living after a cardiac arrest is one in 20 – but the odds of five is a staggering one in 3.2 million.

On matchdays the Amex has at least 368 stewards on duty along with paramedics and other staff from South East Coast Ambulance Service.

There are also more than 30 volunteers from St John Ambulance – including first aiders and emergency transport attendants – on hand to respond to any emergencies in the stands.

The team won the Workplace Hero award for their efforts.

Adrian Morris, the club’s head of security and safety, collected the award on behalf of the team.

He said: “At Albion, we go above and beyond the basic levels of safety and medical support required.

“The medical team we have at the stadium and the care the team provides to everyone is first class.

“The stats speak for themselves. From the five cardiac arrests we’ve had at the stadium, every single person has been back to enjoy the football, which is incredible. I’m extremely proud of the safety and medical team here – they richly deserve this recognition.”

Dr Rob Galloway, an A&E consultant at Brighton’s Royal Sussex County Hospital, is the crowd doctor on Albion matchdays.

He said: “The fact that since the Amex opened we have had five cardiac arrests out of five who have all survived with a great quality of life is remarkable, and is thanks to the whole set up we have and how we work together as a team.”

One of the people Dr Galloway and his team helped save was Paul Forrester, who suffered cardiac arrest at the Leicester City match in March.

He suffered the medical episode when he went to the toilet after arriving early to have a beer with his friend.

Paul, who was 46 at the time, made a quick recovery and was back at the Amex for the 1-0 win over Manchester United in May – which secured Premier League safety.

St John Ambulance chief executive Martin-Houghton Brown said: “The achievements of our award nominees and winners like the Albion matchday safety and medical team are extraordinary.

“I have been overwhelmed by the stories of their everyday heroism in protecting life and health.”
