Albion still have Crystal Palace behind them in the Premier League table - but Burnley have edged above them.
The Seagulls dropped a place to 13th following today's matches.
Roy Hodgson's Palace needed a point to climb past them but lost 1-0 at home to promoted Wolves, who continue to impress.
Burnley were held 1-1 at home by struggling Huddersfield but that was enough to sneak them above the Seagulls on goal difference.
Elsewhere, Bournemouth are up to fifth after thrashing ten-man Watford 4-0 at Vicarage Road.
Leicester were also reduced to ten men by a red card for Wes Morgan in their 2-1 home defeat by Everton.
And rock-bottom Cardiff had Joe Ralls sent-off in their 1-0 defeat by Spurs at Wembley.
