Simon Rusk praised his Albion youngsters after they made their own contribution to a terrific week for the club tonight.

The under-21s came from two down to draw 2-2 away to an experienced Peterborough United side in the Checkatrade Trophy.

That earned them their first point of the competition this season before they added a second by winning a shoot-out 5-4.

It almost did not go that far. The Seagulls hit the bar through Leo Ostigard at a corner in added time.

But Billy Collings saved from Matt Godden to kick-off the shoot out and it was perfection all the way from then on.

Jordan Davies, Viktor Gyokeres, Mathias Normann, Ben White and Aaron Connolly, whose goal sparked the comeback, were on target from the spot.

Albion played some slick football and were unfortunate to trail to Godden’s goal at half-time.

Gyokeres was twice denied by good saves from Aaron Chapman and James Tilley went close.

Callum Cooke hit the post straight after the break for Posh.

They looked home and dry when Jason Cummings chipped in a beauty on 52 minutes.

But Connolly reduced arrears by cutting side and angling a super finish inside the far post on 71 minutes.

Eight minutes later, it was all level as George Cox delivered a super cross and Jordan Davies headed home at the far post.

Rusk said: “Credit to the players. They showed a lot of character because Peterborough had a lot of experienced players.

“The lads held on in and we scored two goals that had lots of quality about them.”
