Lewis Dunk could be in contention for an England debut in Spain.

The Albion centre-back was an unused substitute for the Three Lions as they drew 0-0 in Croatia in the UEFA Nations League last night.

But he could be in the running to feature against Spain in the same competition when the squad move on to Seville on Monday.

Starting centre-back John Stones was booked for a foul early in the second half in Rijeka and, like Jordan Henderson, will be banned for the next match.

Joe Gomez will be favourite to step in but Dunk is hoping to become Albion’s first England full cap since Steve Foster played against Kuwait in the 1982 World Cup.

The Argus:

That last England cap for Foster – and Albion – came, perhaps ironically, in Spain, at the San Mames in Bilbao.

As expected, England boss Gareth Southgate left Dunk on the bench in Rijeka.

But some eyebrows were raised by the fact he went back to a four-man defence, the set-up in which Dunk has played the vast majority of his club football. Stones partnered Harry Maguire in central defence.

Last night’s contest was an eerie affair played behind closed doors.

England players picked to tackle Spain will face a sterner test at the Estadio Benito Villamarin, the atmospheric home of Real Betis.

Teenage sensation Jadon Sancho was the new boy given his chance to shine against Croatia as he went on for the later stages.

Eric Dier and Harry Kane both headed against the woodwork from set-pieces and Marcus Rashford failed to convert a pair of glorious openings in the second half.

But it was a disappointing spectacle and one which left England needing to win on Monday.
