Albion could move into the top ten of the Premier League if results go well against Crystal Palace and Burnley.
But Chris Hughton is more concerned about maintaining a healthy gap over the relegation zone.
The Seagulls are 11th, two points behind Watford and Bournemouth, ahead of Palace's visit tomorrow night and Saturday's trip to Burnley.
Hughton said: "It's very pleasing. You're always reliant on other results around you and we are still a club in a position that probably what is more important for us is below than above.
"The most important thing is still the gap between us and the bottom three.
"At this stage in our development as a club, that will always be the case."
Albion currently have a nine-point cushion over next-to-bottom Burnley and Southampton, who sacked Mark Hughes earlier today.
