Boss Chris Hughton said the better side lost as Albion were beaten at Burnley.

James Tarkowski's untidy first half goal gave Burnley three precious points at the wrong end of the table.

Sub Jurgen Locadia had a great chance to equalise in the second half but headed over.

Hughton said: "I thought we were the better team. You felt there weren't going to be many chances.

"Our centre-halves dealt with things very well. It was a scrappy goal.

"We had the best chance of the game with Locadia."

Albion had 62 per cent possession but failed to really test Joe Hart on the 400th league appearance of his career.

Hughton said: "We were good enough in possession and got into some good areas in the final third but needed to show more quality.

"We didn't do enough in the first half to force that goal. As the game opened up we looked more likely."

Burnley matchwinner Tarkowski, celebrating his third goal of the season, said: "It was a tough afternoon. We had to get a goal and hold on.

"We know we have not been playing great recently so it was a massive day and big three points."
