How we rated Albion's players against Chelsea...

MATHEW RYAN 6: No chance with either of the goals as he was left exposed. Had little to do otherwise. Distribution was good.

MARTIN MONTOYA 6: Preferred to Bruno in the tussle for the right-back role and pretty sound. Left for dead by Hazard in the box for the first goal but no shame in that.

LEON BALOGUN 5: Generally solid and plenty of good defending but the stray pass for Willian to free Hazard for Chelsea's second was a killer.

LEWIS DUNK 7: Testing afternoon for the skipper against Chelsea's nippy front trio. Did not get exposed but trying to nick the ball off Hazard cost him a booking for foul on Kovacic in the same incident.

BERNARDO 8: Growing with every game. Big leap to set up March's goal and lots of pacey work down the left. Deserved man-of-the-match from sponsors.

ANTHONY KNOCKAERT 6: Certainly looked up for the battle and was the one home man who roused the crowd for a long time, though not always well directed.

DALE STEPHENS 5: His first start for a while and found it tough. Albion needed to be sharper and quicker on the ball under pressure.

DAVY PROPPER 6: Is quite adept at keeping possession but did not add the penetrative edged Albion needed to make Chelsea’s life more uncomfortable.

The Argus:

SOLLY MARCH 7: A strange game in that he was the man who gave us a contest with his fine finish (above) – amid one of his more indecisive, tentative performances of the season.

PASCAL GROSS 5: Albion never really got their attacking patterns going and little was seen of Gross, though he tried to get the wide men into action.

GLENN MURRAY 5: Was largely kept quiet by the Chelsea back line although he found space to tee up March for Albion’s only sniff of a first-half chance. Replaced by Andone.

SUBS

Florin Andone: Ruffled the previously serene Chelsea back line.

Yves Bissouma: Added a lot of spark and creativity – but should it have happened eaelier?

Jurgen Locadia: Sent on wide left late on as Albion went 4-3-3.
