Hope Powell says Albion Women’s superb 2-0 victory over Liverpool can be a turning point for her side.

Albion claimed their first Women’s Super League away victory of the season after they produced arguably their best performance so far this term at Prenton Park.

Laura Rafferty gave Albion a half-time lead and Ini Umotong added the second three minutes after the break.

Seagulls coach Powell said: “I am really pleased with how we performed. We kept a clean sheet and executed the game plan.

“It’s something which we have been working hard on in training on how we wanted to set up and credit to everyone involved it’s been a brilliant day.

“I thought we played better in the first half but credit to Liverpool as they put us on the back foot in the second half, but we quite resilient.

“Their keeper made two great saves early, so credit to her but we kept going and the belief, desire and the way the players conducted themselves was really pleasing also.

“I’d say undoubtedly that was our best performance since I took the job. It does help that we won the game so now we need to look forward and take the positives from it and make it a turning point for us.”

Albion made all the early running with Liverpool goalkeeper Anke Preuss forced into producing two excellent saves early on.

Firstly, she dived low to her right to keep out a free header from Rafferty and then pushed over a long-range effort from Chloe Peplow.

The Seagulls got their reward just after the half-hour mark.

Following a corner, a loose ball in the box saw Umotong crash a shot against the bar and Rafferty was left with the simple task of tapping in from inside the six yard box.

It took just three minutes of the second half for the visitors to increase their lead when a loose pass in midfield was seized upon by Umotong and she smartly slipped the ball past Preuss.

Liverpool finally mustered an effort on target as Satara Murray’s header, from a corner, was cleared off the line by Kirsty Barton.

It was the Seagulls who looked the more likely to increase their lead as captain Danielle Buet curled a shot from outside the box just wide.

Despite the Reds using all their substitutes they could not find their way past a well organised Albion defence who held on without any further alarm to claim a valuable three points.
