A LATE flurry of goals saw Albion bow out of the FA Continental Tyres League Cup with a 7-1 defeat at Manchester City.

Nikita Parris’s sixth-minute goal was cancelled out within three minutes by a Dani Buet penalty, but City regained the lead through Lauren Hemp as they went on to claim a semi-final spot.

Caroline Weir struck before the hour mark to boost City’s lead, while the final five minutes saw a second goal for Hemp and further efforts from Claire Emslie, Georgie Stanway and Janine Beckie in a result to rival City’s men’s 9-0 thrashing of Burton on Wednesday night.

City went into the match unbeaten in their group and Parris opened the scoring with her 50th goal for the club.

Two minutes later Karen Bardsley tripped Ini Umotong to give the Seagulls a penalty, which Buet fired in.

Hemp put the hosts back in front with a close-range shot.

Weir extended City’s lead in the 59th minute with a fierce 20-yard effort.

Hemp’s second goal came in the 86th minute before the late onslaught.

Albion coach Hope Powell missed the game through illness.
