Chris Wood has revealed why he was denied the chance to make a bit of history at the Amex.

The Burnley striker could have been the first player to score a hat-trick against Albion at their current home.

Instead, he becomes the first player to twice score doubles against the Seagulls in Falmer.

The feat has been achieved 12 times in league games – four of them by players who were in the matchday squads on Saturday.

Glenn Murray (Reading) and Burnley sub Matej Vydra (when at Watford) have also landed double blows.

Wood scored in either half but his fellow ex-Seagull Ashley Barnes took the penalty which made it 3-0.

The New Zealander himself missed an open goal as the ball ran loose when Barnes went down under pressure from Mathew Ryan.

Wood told The Argus: “You are always disappointed when you have a gilt-edged chance like that and it comes off your heel.

“Of course, Barnesy, being the striker that he is, wants to take the pen when he has won it “That’s normally how it is. We have a rule as strikers.

“If you win it, you normally take it. That’s fair enough.”

Wood scored twice for Millwall at the Amex in December, 2012, before Albion came back to force a 2-2 draw.

He also netted when the Seagulls won 2-1 at The Den earlier in the season.

His double at Elland Road saw Leeds to a 2-0 win over Chris Hughton’s men in the promotion season.

Wood, who admitted he did not know how good his record was against Albion, said: “It was a great win for us.

“It shows in the table. We are up to 15th and it brings a lot of teams into it.

“It brings Brighton into play around the relegation zone.

“It is another game unbeaten for our Premier League record.

“We always know what it is like coming here, it is going to be tough.

“Brighton always play very expansive football and it is hard to get near them most of the time.

“But we worked hard and we worked on our team plan and it came out well.”

Lewis Dunk was an understudy to more senior defenders when Wood signed for Albion on loan from West Brom during the 2010-11 season.

Wood said: “It was a few years ago now but we got on well when I was here.

“I’ve followed his progress throughout his career and he is a good player.

“He showed that with being called up by England.”

As well as the 12 league doubles against Albion at the Amex, the feat has also been achieved by Olivier Giroud (for Arsenal in the FA Cup), Wilf Zaha (for Crystal Palace in the play-offs) and Conor Washington (for Newport County in the League Cup).

The last visiting player to complete a hat-trick against Albion remains Carl Baker for Stockport when they won 4-2 at Withdean in August, 2009. Baker, 36, now plays for Brackley Town.
