Albion's arch rivals Crystal Palace have moved three points and three places above them in the battle to beat the drop.
Roy Hodgson's team triumphed 4-1 at Leicester tonight, a result Albion would love to repeat when they resume their Premier League campaign in the East Midlands on Tuesday.
Michy Batshuayi, signed recently from Chelsea, put Palace ahead in the first half.
Jonny Evans equalised after the break but Wilfried Zaha restored Palace's lead and Luka Milivojevic converted a penalty conceded by Evans.
Zaha added his second and Palace's fourth in stoppage time.
It completed a bad set of results for Albion after Burnley and Newcastle both moved above them earlier with respective home wins against Spurs and Huddersfield.
