Lewis Dunk could turn his attention to FA Cup glory – after losing his place in the England squad.

Albion’s star centre-back was left out of the group named by Gareth Southgate for Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Montenegro.

James Tarkowski and Harry Maguire, who missed the most recent internationals, return after injury and join John Stones and Michael Keane as specialist central defenders.

Kyle Walker offers a right-sided option if Southgate reverts to a back three.

Dunk had been in the last two squads, including a debut in the friendly win over the USA.

He appeared to have made a strong case for further inclusion with his efforts against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

But, despite the absence of left-sided centre-back Joe Gomez, Dunk’s name was missing yesterday in a squad announcement dominated by discussion over a first call for Declan Rice.

He now waits to hear whether he goes into a break in fixtures with a first FA Cup appearance of the season.

Dan Burn has performed well on the left of the defensive pairing in all four ties so far.

But Dunk, who came into the side at the quarter-final stage last year, would be ready for a repeat at Millwall on Sunday.

Speaking after the win at Selhurst Park, he said: “I haven’t played in the FA Cup this year but you want to play every game as a footballer.

“That’s what you train all week for, that’s what your job is – to play games.

“So, if I’m called in, I’ll be ready and you never know what team the gaffer is going to pick so we will wait and see.”

Dunk was on the bench for both cup games against West Brom but was not in the 18 to face Bournemouth, although he travelled, or Derby.

Tom Heaton’s impressive display in goal for Burnley at the Amex recently was among the performances which secured him an England recall.

Southgate said: “He’s had a really consistent run of games. We know Tom, he’s been a really impressive character to have around our squad in the past.

“This is a good opportunity for him to come back with us. He’s had a frustrating period where he missed out on a World Cup.”
