Albion central defender Shane Duffy hated every minute of his latest appearance for the Republic of Ireland.

Even though he helped them to a clean sheet and winning start to Mick McCarthy's second spell in charge.

The Irish won 1-0 in Gibraltar in their opening Euro 2020 qualifier on a plastic pitch in a swirling wind.

Also at one stage a plane took off from the runway just yards behind Darren Randolph's goal.

McCarthy said he did not enjoy the game one bit, a sentiment shared by Duffy.

Asked if he hated it too, Duffy said: "Every minute of it, yes. It was difficult. I'm not making excuses because obviously they had to play the conditions as well, but it was one of the worst I've played in, to be honest.

"It probably didn't look like that on the telly, but job done. Obviously we're a little bit disappointed that we didn't play a little bit better and score a few more goals, but (we got) three points."

Duffy will be back in action against Georgia in more familiar surroundings in Dublin on Tuesday night ahead of Southampton's visit to the Amex on Saturday.
