Inigo Calderon has explained why he felt Albion “over-used” the word #Together in the good times.

But he says his old club need to show unity more than ever as they battle to stay in the Premier League.

Albion adopted the #Together hashtag in the summer of 2015.

Chief executive and vice-chairman Paul Barber issued calls for togetherness both to club employees and fans at the Amex this week.

Calderon, a huge favourite among fans when he played for Albion from 2010 until 2016, follows their fortunes closely.

He tweeted yesterday: “In my opinion, before we overused #together, now it’s the time to be it. Last time at the Molineux (in April ‘17) we won 2-0, stay positive = stay in the league.”

Asked to expand on that comment, Calderon told The Argus: “It was a good slogan at the time but they used it every time.

“When you are top two or three you don’t really need to say that.

“It’s one of those words people say too much, like legend. In the end, everybody is a legend.

“When you say those words too much, they lose the same meaning. Together was like that but now they really need to be together.”

Calderon is concerned by - and has refuted - some fans’ claims that the squad lack desire.

He said: “That hurts me. I’ve been playing for 20 years and I’ve never known a player go out to lose games.

“I think the FA Cup run didn’t help the league.

“Everybody talked cup, cup, cup. It is not that easy to be in two competitions.

“Now there is one more month to be together. After that, you can talk and explain.

“Football is about talking. Everyone has an opinion and has the right to talk. You just have to do it with respect.

“Trust me, the players want to win games. They don’t want to be down there.

“I have been down there a couple of times and it is so bad. It is on your mind 24/7.

“You sleep less. You are thinking about the next game.

“I know how they feel right now but I know they will get the points they need. It’s a good team.”
