Mathew Ryan has revealed where he thinks Albion have gone wrong in their recent slump.

The Aussie goalkeeper reckons they have struggled for a balance between their trademark solidity at the back and looking to be more of a threat.

And it has left them exposed in the second half of the campaign.

Ryan, enjoying a second away clean sheet of the season, was pleased to see Albion add attacking players last summer.

But he says it is a fine line between sticking and twisting when you are looking to establish yourself in elite company.

Albion had little to no attacking threat at Molineux but defended well against a Wolves side whose patient, intricate style perhaps suits them.

The Argus:

Ryan said: “At the beginning of the year we bought in a lot more offensive players to try and improve ourselves when we have the ball.

“I think earlier in the season we had that balance right where, when we went forward, we didn’t over-commit with too many numbers.

“More recently we haven’t had that balance when going forward.

“We have been committing too many people forward and turning the ball over cheaply.

“We have been wide open because of that.

“We didn’t have a quick enough reaction to get back into shape and we have been getting punished that way.

“I think today we were better in terms of not giving the ball away in too many situations where they could counter us.

“The boys were disciplined defensively to get into our shape and, when they got into some attacking situations, we had numbers there in the right place at the right time to take away the danger that was there.”

Ryan made one remarkable save when he blocked from Leander Dendoncker at close range after an initial Diogo Jota header bounced back off the inside of a post.

He said: “On another day, I don’t think Duffers (Shane Duffy) slips on the one that hits the post.

“That was just unfortunate. If he doesn’t slip, I think he clears that situation.”

Albion at last have a first away point against a team from the current top half with two more tough tests to come, at Arsenal and Spurs.

Ryan said: “Every game in this league in my experience has been a tough game so it is nothing new in that respect.

“Hopefully we have been learning along the way from every game.

“From the previous performances to today’s performance, I think the lesson is there.

“We need to be at a competitive level. Then the tactics and the skill come after that.

“Winning means to compete and have desperation to defend and attack and put yourselves into challenges and win second balls.

“If you don’t have that as the first thing, then you are aways behind the eight ball.

“We had that aspect spot-on. Our priority is getting the points we need to be safe.

“Come the end of the season I think we will look back at a big point.

“It could be the psychological boost that we need. But our plan is to still add to the points tally we have got.”

Ryan is not setting any points target but said: “We have beaten big teams in the past. If you don’t believe, then what are you doing?”
