Delray Rawlins wants to follow his great mate Jofra Archer into the England team.

But he is happy to focus on success with Sussex and World Cup progress with Bermuda for now as his best season yet comes to the boil.

Rawlins returns for Sharks tonight as they complete their Vitality Blast South Group fixtures at home to Gloucestershire (6.30pm).

For once, it will not be a tense final night for Sussex.

They booked their home quarter-final with wins away to Middlesex and Glamorgan last weekend.

For what it is worth, they will finish top of the group.

Rawlins was away at the time, helping his native Bermuda secure their spot at the ICC T20 World Cup Global Qualifier later this year.

Rawlins took figures of 2-22 against the USA in the clincher and also hit quick runs against the Cayman Islands as Bermuda won through on their home patch of Sandys Parish in Hamilton.

He said: “It was a nice trip. It was nice to be back on home soil.

“We did the business and we are through to the next round.

“It was nice doing it for myself, obviously getting a few runs, and to help the boys win.

“We now go on to the next stage. We will be playing some better cricket teams in the next round.

“It was a good standard. There some good individual players as you get in T20 but we managed as a team to win key moments in games. It was pretty high intensity.”

Rawlins, who came to Sussex as a teenager, said his T20 action with Bermuda would not rule him out of England availability.

He has been inspired by what Barbados-born Archer has done in the ICC World Cup and the Ashes this summer.

The 21-year-old said: “England is most certainly an ambition.

“Seeing someone like Jofra do so well serves as a massive inspiration. It’s a definite ambition of mine.

“But the focus is on the present - playing for Sussex and doing well.

“This year has been second to none.

“It’s nice to break into the red ball team and do well.

“We struggled for a period before the break for T20 but we are back to winning ways, beating Middlesex.

“And we have a home quarter-final in T20.”

Sussex left it late to qualify last season but got there on the final night by seeing off Middlesex.

At the time, they said the fact they had effectively been playing knockout cricket for the last three games of the group section worked to their advantage.

This time, things have been very different.

They were in charge of their group by the time they lost to Surrey and Essex.

Even two quickfire defeats did not knock them off top spot and wins at Uxbridge and Cardiff have secured that home quarter-final.

That means this evening’s game is a dead rubber for Sussex.

But it probably won’t feel like it in front of a sell-out Friday night crowd at Hove.

Gloucestershire’s requirement from the game will hinge on how they fared at Kent last night.

But they may well need some reward from the game.

Rawlins said: “We are looking to keep competitive. We are hoping to win T20.

“We owe it to ourselves to take this game as seriously as a knockout game. We want to keep momentum, keep winning.

“The boys have been playing some serious cricket.

“It’s a crucial time. No one wants to slip up now.

“To come this far, it would be a sour feeling to lose in the quarter-finals.”

Luke Wright, who suffered a whack to the hand in the win over Glamorgan, was yesterday named in a 14-man squad.

Wright did not bat in Wales but allayed fears via social media this week.

He tweeted: “Thanks for the messages, the X-ray came back clear! Happy days! On to Friday.”

A win for Sussex would see them equal Gloucestershire’s record haul of 21 points from a 14-match South Group programme.

Head coach Jason Gillespie has urged them not to let standards slip. He said: “We had a wonderful weekend where we played some fantastic cricket and it’s great to have got that home quarter-final.

“We enjoyed that and celebrated that, but now it’s time to focus all our energy on the game against Gloucestershire and on how to be as effective as we possibly can in that match.”

Alex Carey is with Australia in Derby so Ben Brown keeps wicket. George Garton could make his first appearance of the Blast campaign.
