Graham Potter has urged Albion's emerging young Irish duo to get more first team playing time.

And Potter himself will have the final say on that in the case of Aaron Connolly.

Connolly and Jayson Molumby, the Seagulls midfielder on loan to Millwall, impressed in a pair of wins for the Republic of Ireland under-21s.

Operating in a role wide on the left, Connolly set up the only goal for Tottenham hotshot Troy Parrot at home to Armenia.

Now Albion fans will wonder whether the Galway teenager adds to the Premier League minutes off the bench he enjoyed in the recent defeat at Manchester City.

The revelation of Connolly’s skills out wide was timely given Leandro Trossard has been ruled out until at least the middle of next month by a groin problem.

Not that it was a revelation to Potter.

He had seen Connolly play in a wider berth before, although it is not his preferred role.

The Albion head coach said: “Both did well. Aaron got a nice assist and they have contributed to the national team so it is good for them.

“It’s good experience, good for their development. “At the same time, it is nice they are back at their clubs and hopefully they can have some time on the pitch at first team level.

“I’ve seen him (Connolly) play there before. I think they (the Irish) have got quite a few forward options and it is something he can do.

“I am not sure he is so keen on it but you have to adapt and it’s good for him as a player.”

Asked about Connolly potentially playing wider for Albion, Potter said: “I think he can do that. It all depends on the situation, what we want to try and do, how we want to try and attack.

“Certainly, for a player so young it is nice to be able to play in a few positions and bring a few things to the team.

“If you asked him, he would want to play through the middle as a central striker.”

Whether he features against Burnley remains to be seen.

Both Connolly and Molumby would probably have been called into Mick McCarthy’s senior Irish squad had the 21s been playing a friendly this week rather than an important qualifier against Viktor Gyokeres’s Sweden.

That chance will surely come, especially if Connolly gets more Premier League time and Molumby adds to his one Championship outing for Millwall so far.
