Simon Rusk praised Albion's victorious under-23s after ending a big week on a high.

A particularly youthful line-up came from behind to beat Tottenham 4-1.

Ryan Longman, a striker from Redhill who made his senior debut as a Carabao Cup sub in midweek, scored twice and set one up for Lorent Tolaj. Danny Cashman was also on target.

Fellow youngsters including Haydon Roberts, who scored on his senior debut on Wednesday, were back at the Amex 48 hours after facing Aston Villa to watch the action.

Under-23s boss Rusk said: “I’m pleased for the players.

“In terms of the team we put out tonight, it was quite young in comparison to what we have had in recent times. It was a really good win.

“The 23s group have had a mixed couple of weeks in terms of really massive high with Steven (Alzate) and Aaron (Connolly) being around the first team but, in terms of what we want to deliver in performances and results, we have probably not quite been there.

“I am pleased the players can enjoy the win.

“Hopefully that can be a platform for building a bit more momentum and confidence.”

Albion has to come behind for the Premier League 2 points after Rodel Richards turned in the box to calmly put Spurs in front.

Rusk said: “We spoke tonight that, if we hung in there even if we went behind, we felt we would have some moments in the game.

“There were some really good goals from our point of view.

“We’re disappointed with the goal we conceded but I think we have to focus on what was good about what we did.

“I liked the work-rate without the ball.

“There was a willingness to compete and battle when we needed to but also to try and switch it and be composed when we needed to.

“We showed a bit of character, a bit of mental resilience and we always have to back the players wearing a Brighton shirt to give us a moment of quality.”

Albion send an under-21s side to Southend on Tuesday in the Leasings.com Trophy.
