Aileen Whelan’s fourth goal of the campaign secured Albion a precious Barclays FA WSL win.

The top scorer guided home Amanda Nilden’s lay-off on 39 minutes to secure an impressive 1-0 success at home to Everton.

Albion had other chances in the first half, the best of them blazed across goal by Danique Kerkdijk, against their fifth-placed opponents.

They were very disciplined and organised in the second period as Everton had plenty of the ball but struggled to create chances.

Megan Walsh made a routine save when Hannah Cain got in behind the defence.

With teams just below them having games called off, Albion’s tally of 12 points puts them six clear of the bottom of the table.

Boss Hope Powell said: “They have got to chase and I think it is harder chasing.

They have got some work to do so please God we do enough that keeps us up there.”
