Striker Neal Maupay believes Albion showed a resilience and mentality against Sheffield United that has been missing.

The Seagulls dug out a 1-1 draw at Bramall Lane after Maupay equalised for the visitors.

And the Frenchman suggested it was the sort of game Albion easily could have lost in the past.

He said: “A few weeks ago we would have tried too hard to win the game.

“Today we said at half-time if we can improve our play on the ball then we can win the game.

“On the other hand, when they have got the ball we need to defend with 11 players, fight for each other and that is what we missed a few weeks ago.

“We have just tried to get some togetherness and a strong mentality among us, which paid off.”

He added: “Sometimes you have to go to get a point because football would be too easy if you just turn up and win a game.

“On some occasions you have to realise you are not going to win the game, but at least we are not going to lose it.”

Albion are one of only seven teams to have taken a point or more at Bramall Lane this season.

Maupay added: “A lot of teams have struggled to get anything here, they are a good team and they are good at what they do.

“For us it is a good point. We must keep this mentality, this mind-set and, obviously, improve our performances on the pitch.”

Maupay admitted the players quickly realised they were going to have to perform a rearguard action in the Steel City.

He said: “We started the game wanting to try and get the three points and wanted to play football, but I think our quality on the ball wasn’t that good and they were good.

“They knew exactly how to attack, how to threaten us and the difference was we realised that on the ball they were a bit better, so we were going to have to do a lot of defending.

“That is football sometimes, you are going to have defend and you can’t always play good football and win games.

“I am really happy with the team’s performance.”

Maupay also highlighted how valuable the point could be to Albion in their bid to stay up.

He said: “We are in a relegation battle, we know that but I think every team in this league have had some problems playing here at Sheffield United.

“Our performance showed us that we need to fight to the end in every single game, if we want to stay in this league.

“A point from this game was a good one but we need to look at our performances because we can always improve.

“We need to do better next week if we want to get the win, but we need to keep this mentality, this desire to win and this togetherness that we showed.”
