Peacehaven manager Mark Shutt says his side will not go all out in their Sussex Senior Cup semi-final against Eastbourne Borough in case they risk harming the rest of their season.

Haven have made it through to the last four of the competition with Eastbourne Borough, Worthing and Albion.

Peacehaven are the huge underdogs to get through against a Borough side who are three leagues above them in the pyramid.

Haven are currently fourth in the Southern Combination Premier League just seven points off the leaders Lancing and are in the semi-finals of two other cups.

However, with the final in reach, Shutt, pictured, says he need to be careful about overdoing it against Borough with a shot of promotion the priority and two other trophies on the cards for Haven.

The Argus:

He said: “Borough are a good side but what I don’t want to do is have a massive go trying to get into the final because we are doing so well in the league challenging at the top end and are also in the semi-finals of both the Peter Bentley Cup and the RUR Cup.

“It will be good to test ourselves against a team like Eastbourne.

“It is a free hit for us as we not expected to win, so we will just go out and do our very best.”

Haven have beaten sides who are in a higher division like Lewes en route to the semi-finals.

National League South Borough, though, are a step up again with ex-pros such as Dean Cox and Greg Luer.

Shutt admits Peacehaven do not really know what to expect against Borough.

He said: “The tricky thing for us is that we do not know an awful lot of about them.

“It is very different to playing Saltdean, who we will know all their formations and players and their style of football.

“Whereas, with Eastbourne we have been over to watch them and they have been over to watch us, but we will not be very clued up on them.

“It will be a tough challenge for us because a lot of their players have been professional or are semi-professional at the minute and some of them probably still use football as their main income.”

One player in the Peacehaven ranks who nearly made it as a professional is Cam Wiltshire.

The midfielder was at Albion’s academy and signed a professional deal, before being released a year later having not been able to make the jump from the youth team to the senior side.

Shutt said: “Cam was a professional for a year at Brighton but never made a single senior appearance.

“Apart from Cam, none of our players have been professional or been close to being one.

“A lot of them have been with Brighton boys and were released at 13 so they are at a good county league standard.”

Borough manager Danny Bloor is certainly not taking the lower league opponents lightly.

He said: “I have watched them a couple of times ahead of the game, the first against Lewes in the last round and in the league against Eastbourne Town and I have the upmost respect for them.

“I never watch our opposition twice, so I have huge respect for Peacehaven.

“We really want to get to this final, so we will be working hard to get into it.”

He added: “It has been a difficult season for us with the well documented financial problems so it would be a reward to everyone behind the scenes and the fans to get to the final.”

Bloor was initially brought it by Borough on a temporary basis until the end of the season.

Results have improved under his guidance and he last week agreed a new deal to manage the Sports next season.

Although he was happy to stay on, he warned the job of keeping them up is not done yet.

He said: “Of course I am pleased to get the new deal but my job was to come in and guarantee the club’s status in this league, which is not done yet, so we need to focus on securing that first.”
