We are bringing matchday back during the Prem shutdown.

Our liveblogs bring memories flooding back – and give a great feel for how we were all feeling as matches played out.

Today we make a first trip back to the Championship promotion season and a thrilling finale away to Birmingham City and their new boss Gianfranco Zola just before Christmas.

The Argus:

The 2-1 win, secured almost on the final whistle by Glenn Murray, ensured Albion kept pace with their promotion rivas, who had played earlier.

------------------

4.15pm: Albion are back on the late shift today – but their pursuit of promotion is not the only story in town.

The Seagulls are at Birmingham City for a 5.30pm kick-off where much of the media focus will be on the new man in the home technical area, Gianfranco Zola.

Huddersfield completed an excellent three-win week with success at Norwich last night to close the gap on the Seagulls to six points going into today’s game.

Albion come into the match on the back of the 3-2 midweek win over Blackburn but will be wondering what surprises, if any, Zola might throw at them after replacing Gary Rowett in the wake of Blues’ 2-1 win over Ipswich.

5pm: So wins for Newcastle and Reading, to follow Huddersfield last night, and a decent point for Derby at Fulham. All away from home. Follow that, Albion!

5.30pm: To the disapproval of the home end to our left, Albion have opted to change ends and will defend the Tilton in the first half. It's under way...

5.33pm: Birmingham hit the post in the first minute. Kieftenbeld ghosted in behind the unawares Bong at the far post and guided a low cross delivered by Jutkiewicz against the upright. Home fans are up for this. Probably the best atmosphere I've heard here, although the bar was not set particularly high on previous visits. Albion fans have a corner section closest to Kuszczak's goal in this first half.

The Argus:

5.36pm: Dazzling from Knockaert as he takes down a high ball, beats his man with ease but sees his low shot saved by Kuszczak at the near post.

5.45pm: Skalak, the assist-provider here last season, whips a free-kick into the box and Albion feel Duffy is being impeded. But a corner is given and, though Duffy meets it at the far post, Kuszczak gathers the loose ball.

5.47pm: Knockaert again eases past Grounds, who pulls him down just outside the box. City felt it was a dive but Grounds is booked. The Frenchman then delivers the free-kick at pace to the far post but it is too high for Murray.

6.10pm: Knockaert's driven cross is headed by Morrison against Shotton but rebounds kindly to Kuszczak. Then Duffy's foul on Jutkiewicz gives Cotterill chance to flight a free-kick into the box. Instead he tries to fool everyone by shooting inside the near post but Stockdale is across to gather. Albion respond but Knockaert fires way high and wide from 25 yards.

6:14pm: Fine defending from Dunk as he slides in to block a Jutkiewicz shot after loose play from Albion. That sparks a flurry from the home side in which the Seagulls clear a far post cross.

6.18pm: A nice exchange of Albion passes under pressure near their own area actually gains a polite little ripple of applause from home supporters. But they need to be impressing further forward. That's half-time.

6.39pm: Jutkiewicz turns and hits a low 20-yarder which is easily gathered by Stockdale.

The Argus:

6:42pm – GOAL: Looping header by Jutkiewicz after Davis and Stewart combined down the right. Birmingham lead 1-0.

6.46pm: Albion came from behind to win here last season - but that was much earlier in the game. Home fans singing the praises of Zola while the visitors need to step up a gear or two. Skalak delivers a free-kick into the goalmouth and it bounces around before being cleared.

6.53pm: Albion fans doing that "Get into 'em" chant you hear from fed-up supporters demanding an upturn in performance. There's a double switch as Skalak makes way for March and Norwood replaces Sidwell.

6.56pm: March gets a talking to from ref Andy Madley after a late challenge.

7pm: A bit more promising from the subs. Norwood's nice pass finds March, who makes space to cross but then sees his ball in cleared. Then March again, playing wide left, eases past Stewart and chips a lovely ball to the far post which causes problems. But there is no final touch.

7.03pm: March ghosts past a challenge easily but his shot is blocked. The (sort of) pressure continues but Norwood's shot from outside the box swings wide. Hemed is on for Baldock and Stewart replaced by Dacres-Cogley.

7.05pm: Jutkiewicz swings into a full-blooded left-footed shot from outside the box and Stockdale dives to his left to parry it wide. Cotterill's resulting corner flicks of a couple of heads and loops on to the roof of the net with a goal kick awarded. Jutkiewicz was again the man challenging.

7.08pm: Hughton telling March to play a few yards infield and allow space for Bong to attack. He gets in a cross which is cleared. Then a sliced clearance gifts Albion a corner which comes to nothing.

7.11pm: Blues send on Tesche for Gleeson. Albion need to keep asking questions of the hosts. There is not too much composure in that defence and none at all amid the bank of home supporters behind Kuszczak's goal.

The Argus:

7.12pm – GOAL: It's 1-1 on 82 minutes. Fantastic work by March wide left to glide outside Tesche and his low cross is thumped home first-time by KNOCKAERT. March went wide of his marker as Bong's movement drew another defender away to make space, got to the byline and got the delivery right.

7.20pm: Terrific move by Albion down their right but Knockaert just gets his touch wrong as he bursts into the box and the ball runs behind for a goal kick. Then Stockdale delivers a long ball into the box, Kuszczak comes and doesn't get to it, Duffy does and Grounds gets his header away from right in front of goal.

7.23pm: After Duffy was denied, there was a March follow-up which was blocked for a corner - which Kuszczak managed to flap away. We are inside five added minutes and veteran defender Robinson goes on for Spector. The home side have everyone back defending now.

The Argus:

7.24pm – GOAL: Header by MURRAY from Knockaert corner.

7.25pm: All over! There was barely time to restart. Murray ran the length of the field to celebrate with the away support when he scored. Sensational scenes among Albion team and fans.

7.27pm: Murray is interviewed by Sky Sports with Albion fans bellowing "There's only one Glenn Murray" as a backdrop!

The Argus:

Birmingham: Kuszczak; Spector (Robinson 90+2), Morrison, Shotton, Grounds; Kieftenbeld, Gleeson (Tesche 80), Davis, Stewart (Cogley 73), Cotterill; Jutkiewicz. Unused subs: Legzdins, Adams, Solomon-Otabor, Maghoma.

Albion: Stockdale; Bruno, Dunk, Duffy, Bong; Knockaert, Stephens, Sidwell (Norwood 63), Skalak (March 63); Baldock (Hemed 72), Murray. Unused subs: Ankergren, Pocognoli, Goldson, Towell.
