This was one of the most fondly remembered Albion matches of recent years.

Chris Hughton’s men went to QPR and held on for a 2-1 win which edged them closer to promotion.

They did so against a QPR side who has little to play for but were fired up to spoil the party and kept throwing on strikers in the second half.

You will see references to Smith, which is Matt Smith, the giant centre-forward. There were flashbacks to the way Charlie Austin’s two goals wiped out a 2-0 lead the previous season at the same venue.

But the Seagulls held on – and, when you look back at this report, you realise there actually were precious few clear chances for QPR.

It is worth bearing mind Shane Duffy was ruled out at the time and Lewis Dunk, who went off at half-time, had been an injury doubt for the game.

Gaetan Bong was rested so Sebastien Pocognoli played at left-back. The rest is history….

The Argus:

6:12pm: Sixty years since they won at Loftus Road, eight years since they won an Easter fixture. The opportunities to right some wrongs over the next 11 days are plentiful for Albion. And so might be the twists and turns in this promotion race. We are at QPR looking to see whether the present-day team can repeat what their predecessors of September 1957 managed, thanks to a lone far post header by battering ram centre-forward Peter Harburn on the hour. Albion have been back 11 times since then and recorded six draws and five defeats. The last four meetings here have finished all-square. QPR have won their last four home games. The last visiting team to win here? Huddersfield, two months ago.

7.45pm: Albion in all black tonight and the two-tier away end, to our right, is packed of couse. Away we go with Albion defending the away end.

7.51pm: Smith beat Dunk in the air when the first high ball was sent in but Huenemeier was first to the knock down. Then another long diagonal was sent in and Bruno won the header ahead of Washington and nodded back to Stockdale.

7.52pm: Smith had success for a second time in the air, this jumping against Huenemeier, but the knock down was cleared. Looks like Rangers will go route one to the 6ft 6in striker.

8.02pm: Nice sweeping attack by Albion from left to right and Bruno's low cross flashed across the goalmouth just ahead of both Hemed and Murray. The Seagulls just starting to pose a few questions now.

8.08pm: Flashback to my days occasionally watching Alex King and Wasps here years ago as the hosts lofted an up-and-under high into the Albion 22 - sorry, penalty area. Smith's eyes lit up but Stockdale came almost to the edge of his area and punched clear.

8.20pm - GOAL DISALLOWED: Murray had the ball in the net from March's cross but he was just offside - no goal. Good, patient build-up though.

8.29pm: Danger again from the giant Smith. He headed the ball down from a free-kick and Perch's blast was blocked by Bruno in front of goal.

8.30pm - GOAL DISALLOWED: Offside again, this time Hemed as he turned home Pocognoli's low shot.

8.33pm - HALF-TIME: Into added time and Perch escaped with a talking-to after a pretty ugly challenge on Pocognoli. Knockaert delivered the free-kick deep, Huenemeier headed it back into the goalmouth and Rangers cleared.

8.49pm: The second half is under way with Albion now playing towards the away end. Tomori replaced Dunk at the interval. How will he cope against Smith?

9.01pm: Smith was picked up by Huenemeier at the last corner but the big man pulled away and got in a header - straight at Stockdale. Then Bruno whipped in a terrific cross at the other end which Smithies bravely punched away from Huenemeier.

The Argus:

9:02pm - GOAL: No offside this time and MURRAY goes clear to finish in the 58th minute. Murray won the ball near halfway and found Hemed. Hemed produced a super through ball and Murray was clear of the defence. We looked for a flag, it rightly was not raised, and he finished in front of a euphoric away end.

The Argus:

9.08pm - GOAL: Albion awarded the free-kick, correctly as it turns out despite a lot of complaints from home fans and some doubts up here. Foul by Lynch on Murray near the right-hand coner of the penalty area. POCOGNOLI curled an absolute gem over the wall and inside the angle.

9.15pm: Of course Albion were 2-0 up here last season and were pegged back - pretty much single-handedly by Charlie Austin. Back to tonight's action. Bruno went for the kill and charged forward again but his low cross was cleared.

9.18pm - GOAL: And just like that QPR are back in it as Smith glances home a header from a corner. He rose well above Huenemeier and March could not quite head it off the line. Just before that, Smith won a header and Stockdale made the initial save before Albion cleared. Like Charlie Austin last time here, the big man is the obvious threat.

9.27pm: QPR have plenty of fowards on now and are pouring forward. Washington half-volleyed just over after Sylla caused problems and then Smith could not finish in a scramble.

9.34pm: We are into a minimum of five added minutes and QPR's fans are roaring their team on. Albion's have gone a bit quiet for now.

9.38pm: R's goalkeeper Smithies went up for a corner but the delivery was shocking and headed away by the first defender. Then half a chance as the ball dropped on the edge of the box but Sylla dragged his shot wide - and the singing rises again away to my right!

9.39pm - FULL-TIME: Huge defensive header by Bruno - and it's all over! The celebrations will really start now. A massive night for Albion - their first win here since 1957 and a result which matches Huddersfield's here two months ago.
