Albion legend Michael Robinson has died. He was 61.

Robinson played for Albion in their top-flight days and is regarded by many as their greatest ever striker.

He scored the winning goal in the 1983 FA Cup semi-final versus Sheffield Wednesday and set up the famous “And Smith must score” chance at the end of the final against Manchester United.

Having netted 37 league goals for the Seagulls, he earnt a move to Liverpool, where he won league title and European Cup honours.

He later went on to become a hugely popular top television presenter and analyst in Spain, were his death is dominating the sporting headlines this morning.

Robinson was diagnosed with cancer in 2018 but recovered sufficiently to resume his media career.

He had suffered health complications in the last few days.

A tweet from Robinson’s verified Twitter account on Tuesday confirmed the news, saying: “With tremendous sadness we tell you about Michael’s passing.

“It leaves us with a great emptiness, but also countless memories, filled with the same love that you have shown for him.

“We will be eternally grateful to you for making this man SO HAPPY, he never walked alone. Thank you.”
