Bas Savage has revealed the secret of his latest scoring spurt - new red boots.

Nicky Forster has been grabbing the goalscoring plaudits for Albion with seven in his last 12 appearances.

It has almost escaped un-noticed that Forster's former Reading team-mate has also hit three goals in his last six outings after plundering six in nine last season.

Savage changed boots for the trip to Hartlepool last month and they seem to have made all the difference.

His injury-time winner in the north-east has been followed by further goals at home to Luton and tonight's FA Cup rivals Cheltenham when the sides met in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy last week.

Savage said: "I have finally settled on a pair of boots. I've had 12 or 15 pairs already this season but the bright red Puma's are here to stay.

"I feel comfortable in them. I hadn't felt comfortable before. I hadn't found the right pair, so I am always chopping and changing.

"The expression is if you look good you play good. You have got to be comfortable in your footwear, otherwise you won't focus and concentrate and you get a few corns as well!"

Red boots are not the only reason for Savage's return to goalscoring form. He also feels happier up front alongside Forster, rather than out on the right wing where he was used earlier in the season.

"I can get into the game more," he said. "I don't mind being wide right but sometimes games pass you by and you are not getting service out there. I think recently you have seen the best of me up front.

"Fozzy is on fire at the moment. We are both doing well and working hard. We work on our partnership in training.

"He is playing well but that goes for the whole team. It starts from the back and we are all pulling together."

Savage has bagged ten goals in 28 starts and seven substitute appearances since joining Albion in January.

That is quite a contrast to just two goals in 66 games for his previous clubs Gillingham, Bristol City, Bury, Wycombe Wanderers and Reading.

"I'm feeling good," he said. "I thought I could have done better on Saturday (at Leyton Orient) but it was a good team performance and I think my form has been really good.

"I'm just getting into goalscoring positions a bit more and arriving at pace. Earlier in my career I was a striker but didn't probably have the mentality of a striker, knowing that you are judged on goals.

"Now I try to place myself in and around the box and try to get on the end of things. I have a real desire to score.

"I am pleased with the contribution I am making to the team. If I keep putting in good performances and working hard, more goals will come."

Savage, 25, is poised to secure his future with the Seagulls by signing a new, longer deal.

His current contract runs out at the end of December and talks are ongoing.

"Hopefully something will be sorted out very soon," he said. "I've had just a year but I am definitely looking for a longer extension to my contract.

"The team are doing well, there is a good vibe around the place and I think the management can take us places.

"I want to be part of that and to do that I want to sign for longer."
