Young English players could have more chance to shine in the coming seasons.

Albion academy manager John Morling can see doors opening due to Brexit and the belt-tightening which results from the Covid-19 crisis.

Graham Potter has called some under-23s in to train with the seniors, including Brighton-born centre-back Haydon Roberts.

Morling said: “For youth development as a whole, opportunities will arise from this, no question.

“But I think Brexit will have a bigger impact in terms of being able to sign foreign players.

“Between the two, it will put a reliance on making sure academies produce players for first teams.

“As a youth development, you want that pressure as long as you get the opportunity.

“Anything that is going to increase the number of players’ opportunities to play first-team football, we should welcome it.

“We’re lucky that we have a club and philosophy where Graham and Dan Ashworth have made a big impact in terms of playing some of the younger players.”

Morling expects the crop of under-23s currently on loan to push for places in Potter’s plans next season.

He said: “In the summer we have quite a few players coming back from loan spells, like Ben White and Christian Walton, who all would want to have a chance to play in our first team.

“That’s a great problem to have, but that work is sort of done.

“It’s now about the next ones. Who are the next 16s, 17s, 18s? And making sure the conveyor belt at nines and tens keeps going.”
