Albion expect their out of contract players to sign up for the rest of the season.

But their future beyond that remains uncertain.

Head coach Graham Potter sees no problems in extending deals which currently take Ezequiel Schelotto and Beram Kayal through to June 30 by a month to take in the rest of the delayed campaign.

Leon Balogun is also out of contract this summer but is currently with Wigan.

Seagulls players out on loan in the Championship will see the campaign out where they are and then return to discuss their futures.

That includes defenders Ben White (Leeds) and Matt Clarke (Derby) as well as midfielder Jayson Molumby (Millwall).

Anthony Knockaert is on loan at Fulham but looks certain to make that deal more permanent.

Schelotto is the one would-be free agent who has played for Albion in the league this season.

His representative has dropped hints via the media of interest both in Europe and Argentina but the player and his family would love to stay in Brighton and Hove.

For now, he will be secured until the end of the current campaign in late July.

Potter said: “That is something we are speaking about at the moment but nothing to report on that.

“The indication is that they want to stay and be part of what we are doing and finish off the season and then take further decisions at the end. Nothing to worry about.”

Schelotto has enjoyed a new lease of life at Albion under Potter’s guidance and offers a handy option in the wing-back berth.

He helped change the game as sub in the 3-3 draw at West Ham and responded to a hostile atmosphere when impressing as a starter at Sheffield United.

The Argentinean would appear to stand a chance of securing new terms when his current three-year deal ends this summer.

Kayal and Balogun appear less likely to stay although, clearly, Albion’s plans have to cater for both Premier League and Championship football next term.

Potter was happy to allow both players to go out on loan in the Championship this season.

Kayal, a big favourite among many Albion fans, returned in the winter due to injury which ruined his loan stint at Charlton.

Jurgen Locadia is also on loan but the fact his league season with Cincinnati has yet to start, and that he has a new boss in Jaap Stam, makes his situation less clearcut, although he does not appear to be part of Potter’s plans.

Football leagues will be allowed to open transfer windows before the current campaign is concluded under new regulations issued by FIFA yesterday.

The world governing body announced the measures in response to the delays to leagues across the globe caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

But Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has already said England’s top flight will not allow clubs to sign players before July 25, after the delayed campaign is brought to an end.

Most European leagues have similar plans in place, but FIFA’s new regulations would allow for windows to open earlier.
