Graham Potter has praised a “magnificent” Albion debut by Tariq Lamptey.
But he revealed the 19-year-old right-back’s big night almost ended early.
Lamptey needed stitches to his mouth after an aerial collision midway through the first half.
He went on to produce a highly promising 90 minutes as Albion drew 0-0 at third-placed Leicester City.
Albion boss Potter said: “I think you could see his attributes. He has got great speed.
“I thought he competed well, showed great courage because he took a heavy smash to the face and needed stitches.
“He had a big hole on the side of his face.
“But he played against some good players out there and I thought he was magnificent.”
Potter said it was “touch and go” as to whether the former Chelsea youngster would have to be replaced during the first half.
But he added: “It was a great debut for him. I’m pleased for him.”
Kasper Schmeichel saved Neal Maupay’s first-half penalty but Albion had to defend well for their point, especially in the second half.
It was their second successive 0-0 draw away from home, more than 15 weeks apart.
Potter said: “I am really proud of the players. It’s not easy to limit a team like Leicester with the players they have and then the subs coming on give you more problems.
“But I thought we defended well and, when we could we tried to carry a threat.”
