Albion are expected to agree a deal for Wigan youngster Jensen Weir.

The 18-year-old midfielder has travelled south to tie up his move, according to a well-placed source in the North West.

Although the transfer window does not open until the season has ended, the clubs can reach preliminary agreement before that.

Weir, whose father David is on the Albion staff as pathway development manager, has not played in the Championship this season and was not part of the Latics’ draw at Barnsley today.

He has been training with the first team all season but Paul Cook and his staff have delayed putting him in the squad so as not to knock him back before he is sufficiently developed.

Weir appeared once in the Carabao Cup but has mostly been playing for the under-18s and development squad.

The reported £500,000 initial fee will help see Wigan through current financial problems.

Weir, born in Warrington, has played age group international football for both Scotland and England
