Fans could return to Premier League matches in October.

Boris Johnson today revealed an intention to reopen stadia in the autumn.

Prem clubs including Albion are already discussing detailed protocol which would allow them to admit supporters.

The new season is likely to start on the second weekend of September.

The Prime Minister said today: "We will pilot larger gatherings in venues like sports stadiums with a view to a wider reopening in the autumn.

"From October, we intend to bring back audiences in stadiums.

"Again, these changes must be done in a Covid-secure way, subject to the successful outcome of pilots."

The Argus highlighted some of the factors which must be addressed before fans can return in this background piece.

Johnson said stadia would not open to full capacity for "some time" but added: "This is a major step in the right direction for the resumption of live spectator sport across the country."

Test events with spectators present will include racing at Goodwood next month.

When fans return, strict social distancing and crowd management rules will be in place.
