Albion are still on the trail of Darwin Nunez.

A well-placed source today confirmed talks are ongoing - amid suggestions in Spain that the Seagulls are well placed to land the Uruguayan goal-getter.

Local media covering his current club Almeria have been told Albion have moved ahead of Benfica in the running for Nunez’s signature and are close to sealing the deal.

It is unclear whether that briefing has been given in an attempt to spur Benfica into action

The recently deposed Portuguese champions have been widely seen as leading candidates to sign Nunez but saw a £20.5 million bid rejected.

They are keen to include players in any deal to lower the transfer fee payable but that does not interest Almeria.

Albion see Nunez as a good option but a potentially tricky one to pull off.

Benfica are a more famous name and can offer European football - with the possibility of raising funds against expected Champions League income - but the Seagulls are likely to be on a firmer financial footing.

They are never keen to get into bidding wars which could count against them landing Odsonne Edouard (Celtic), Rhiann Brewster  (loan from Liverpool) or Ollie Watkins (Brentford).
