A Torquay player could become an FA Cup second round hero if he scores the winning goal against Albion.

One of the members of the home dressing room has already experienced that feeling.

Chris Hargreaves knocked out the Seagulls when he was playing for Plymouth in a second round replay at Withdean eight years ago.

The veteran midfielder followed up his decider in Argyle's 2-1 victory with the equaliser in the third round at Reading.

Plymouth won the replay again before losing at home to Preston in round four.

Now Hargreaves, 35, is hoping to revive a few more FA Cup memories with Torquay.

He was only 17 when he made a memorable debut in the competition by scoring twice for Grimsby at York.

Hargreaves said: "When we played at York in the league a few weeks ago, I turned to young Raiff Gwinnett (trainee) and said 'I don't think you were born when I scored my first goals here!' "It sounds a long time ago but to be honest it seems like only yesterday.

"I've played against Manchester United, for Northampton, and got to the fifth round a couple of times. I would absolutely love to play another big club.

"But, more than that, I think it would be great for our young lads to experience something like that.

"The odds of me getting that sort of chance are getting longer with every year. But I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to Saturday's game.

"If I was a Brighton player, I wouldn't be looking forward to it, we've got that in our favour.

"We're playing well and things are good at the club. Everything is set up for a chance to get to the third round.

"If not, so be it, and we'll get back on to the league."

Torquay are Hargreaves' tenth club and he will be playing in his 43rd FA Cup tie tomorrow in a career already spanning more than 570 appearances.

"I'm quietly pleased that I've played lots of games this season and I'm doing okay," he said. "It's nice to be able to relax and enjoy playing football.

"The structure at the club is right, there is no place for any wrong-doing and everyone is chomping at the bit.

"And when you think that Steve Woods, the captain and a tremendous player, is desperate to get back in the side and the quality of two young lads, Darren Mullings and Paul Hinshelwood (ex-Albion), who have just gone out on loan to Tiverton must be thinking that Christmas has come early.

"I'm loving every minute, loving every game, and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else."

Torquay, relegated from the Football League last season, are making a pretty good job of trying to bounce back at the first attempt.

Paul Buckle's team have won their last three matches and six of the last seven. They are just a point behind National Conference leaders Aldershot, four clear of third-placed Cambridge United, and have won 16 out of 22 games in all competitions, plundering 57 goals in the process.

Buckle has a clean bill of health, with Tony Bedeau back in training after a hip muscle tear.

Teenager Mark Ellis, on loan from Bolton, could keep his place in the centre of defence, although skipper Steve Wood is available after missing the last three matches with a hamstring injury.

Former Exeter striker Lee Phillips is favourite to replace banned Millwall loanee Chris Zebroski.
