Albion defender Fern Whelan says it was a tough decision to retire from the football.

The 31-year-old annnounced today that after a long hard battle with injury that she would not be able to continue playing with immediate effect based on medical advice.

Since moving to the Seagulls in 2017 from Everton, Whelan has made 17 appearances and scored two goals.

Whelan took to Twitter and said the following about her decision to retire:"It is with a heavy heart that i can finnally anounce my early retirment from the beautiful game.

"The decision has not been easy and has not been take lightly, but I feel now is the right time to end the ongoing love-hate relationship that myself and football have."
