Albion have not given up hope of giving Percy Tau his Premier League chance.

The club are following their on-loan striker’s progress in Belgium with interest.

They have so far resisted chances to cash in on a player who is attracting plentiful and sustained interest from Champions League clubs.

The South Africa star has been unable to secure a work permit to play in this country.

But that could change in the wake of Brexit if endorsement requirements are amended.

Albion’s search for a striker in this window has been well-publicised.

But Tau remains in their longer-term thoughts.

A post-Brexit change in the rules covering work permits was for a while seen as the best chance of speeding up Alexis Mac Allister’s arrival – until the Argentinian made progress on the field.

South Africa are way down the world rankings, which makes attempts to bring Tau in more of a challenge.

Albion have been waiting to hear new rules and that will be a potentially significant landmark in whether he will be able to come into the country more easily than at present.

A well-placed source said: “Certainly the plan very much is to still bring Percy in at the first opportunity.”

Get set for a TV football feast

Albion believe Tau could add something in the Premier League and have been impressed by the level and consistency of his performances, including in the Champions League.

They see him as a different kind of player to what they have.

Tau scored off the bench on his Anderlecht debut as he aims to help them recover from a disappointing mid-table campaign last term.

He then netted again after a neat one-two on his first start.
