Tariq Lamptey is one of several Albion players who have been given their first caps for their country in the last year.

The 19-year-old full back was the latest of those to win his first cap for England U21s on Tuesday, after being called up at the beginning of the month for their Euro Qualifiers against Kosovo and Austria.

Lamptey had to wait a game for his first involvement after being an unused substitute in the 6-0 win over Kosovo on Friday.

He started the game against Austria on Tuesday at right back and made an impressive introduction.

The former Chelsea youngster caused problems for the Austrian left back with his pace and delivered a couple of dangerous crosses, which had to be dealt with.

He also made a good block in the first half throwing himself in the way of a goal-bound effort to deflect the ball behind for the corner.

Lamptey will now hope his Albion form secures further calls for the 21s and ultimately, the senior side.

And he will not be short of inspiration as he looks around the Seagulls’’ squad.

Several colleagues have made senior international debuts in recent times.

Jayson Molumby got his first cap for Republic of Ireland after being called up for Stephen Kenny’s squad to take on Bulgaria and Finland in the UEFA Nations League.

Molumby, like Lamptey, spent the first game against Bulgaria on the bench as an unused in the 1-1 draw.

However, on Sunday when Ireland played Finland at the Aviva Stadium Molumby started the game and had two familiar faces in the starting line-up in Albion teammate Aaron Connolly and skipper Shane Duffy, who left Albion on a season-long loan to join Celtic recently.

Molumby played the whole 90 minutes in what was a disappointing 1-0 defeat for Ireland.

He could get another opportunity next month in their Euro 2020 play-off against Slovakia, with Ireland boss Kenny saying that Molumby and other inclusions will depends on “how much football the players get at their clubs.”

Leandro Trossard is another player who got his long awaited first cap for Belgium in the recent internationals after being called up once again for their Nations League games against Denmark and Iceland.

The 25-year-old had been called up for Belgium a few times over the last couple of years but has had rotten luck having to either pull out of the squad, due to injury or being an unused substitute.

However, on Sunday he finally got his first cap in the 2-0 win over Denmark after coming on for goalscorer Dries Mertens in the 79th minute.

Trossard was hoping he might get his first start in the game against Iceland on Tuesday night, but he was an unused sub in the 5-1 win.

Prior to Lamptey, Molumby and Trossard at the start of the year Viktor Gyokeres got his first cap for Sweden.

The 22-year-old forward, who impressed out on loan at Bundesliga 2 side FC St Pauli last season got his first run out for the senior side in January coming on in the 63rd minute in their 1-0 defeat to Finland.

Three days later he then made his first start playing the full 90 minutes and scoring his first senior goal in the 2-2 draw against Iceland.

Towards the back end of last year three of Albion bright young prospects made got their first caps.

The first was Alexis Mac Allister, who was on loan at Boca Juniors at the time, when he was picked for the Argentina squad for friendlies against Chile and Mexico. He got his first cap on September 6 coming on as a substitute for the final 20 minutes in their 0-0 draw against Chile.

Five days later he made his first start playing 65 minutes in the 4-0 win over Mexico.

It was then Aaron Connolly’s turn, after he was called up to the Republic of Ireland squad on October 5, the same day he scored two goals for Albion on his Premier League debut against Tottenham at the Amex in a 3-0 win.

He got his first cap for Ireland a week later, when he came on as a substitute for Luton striker James Collins in their 0-0 draw against Georgia.

Connolly then made his first start for Ireland three days later in the 2-0 defeat to Switzerland where he played 70 minutes, to cap off what was a month to remember for the striker.

He was then followed by another of the players to breakthrough into Albion’s first team under Graham Potter last season in Steven Alzate.

The 22-year-old midfielder was picked by Colombia for their friendlies against Peru and Ecuador on November 6.

Ten days later, he made his first cap coming on as a substitute in the 74th minute in a 1-0 win against Peru.

On September 20, Alzate made his first start for Colombia playing the full 90 minutes in their 1-0 win over Ecuador.

There could be more first caps for Albion players over the next year, if players like Ben White were to impress in their first season in the Premier League, with England manager Gareth Southgate stating he would pick players “based on form”.

Throw in summer additions of Joel Veltman and Adam Lallana and Albion’s international contingent is bigger than ever.
