Albion want Ben White to enjoy his football in the Premier League.
But Graham Potter has warned there will be “some ups and downs”.
The highly rated centre-back is set for his top-flight debut as Albion host Chelsea at the Amex tonight (8.15pm, Sky Sports).
Potter has been impressed by how White has dealt with speculation about his future and clamour from Leeds fans for their club to sign him permanently.
The attention will not go away with Liverpool among clubs reported to be keeping a close eye on him.
Why Albion want to see more of Viktor Gyokeres
Leeds seemingly missed White in defence amid the chaos of their opening 4-3 defeat at Anfield.
Now the 22-year-old hopes to get off to a flyer with the Seagulls.
Potter said: “We know that, rightly, he is making the step up from the Championship to the Premier League and, from our experience of that, it is not so straightforward.
“Regardless of what anybody thinks, we know there will be some challenges, we know there will be some ups and downs for him.
“That is part of being a young player, part of being a player making those steps to get to where he wants to get to.
“But it’s our job to try to help him and make sure that he can enjoy his football and be himself and that he can be part of a winning team, because that obviously helps players develop.
“But, yes, it’s not quite so straightforward.”
