To get the lowdown on Albion’s opponents tonight Chelsea, I spoke to Alan Smith, who covers Chelsea for football.london:

What have you made of Chelsea’s signings so far ?

It is impossible not to be impressed by how they have strengthened in all the areas that Lampard required. It is looking as though a deal for Edouard Mendy is close to completion, but the lack of a proper pre-season means it could take some weeks for all the new signings to gel. I just hope people don’t expect it to click right away.

Out of the signings they have made who is the most exciting one?

Kai Havertz is the one fans are most excited by (and is the most expensive at an initial £72million) but Timo Werner could have the greatest impact on the Blues if he can translate his Bundesliga form from last season into English football which will be a challenge.

Given the number of and the quality of the signings Chelsea have made will they be looking to challenge for the title this season?

For me Manchester City and Liverpool seem too far ahead of them, but the minimum requirement is to be pushing them a lot closer than they were last season. Chelsea fans will feel anything worse than a third place finish this season would be a massive disappointment.

Who is the player Albion will have to keep a close eye on in the game?

It has to be Werner and Havertz obviously but, if fit following a spell out with a hamstring injury, Christian Pulisic could cause havoc cutting in from the left wing.

Other new signings like Thiago Silva, Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell won’t be involved at the Amex.

How will Chelsea line-up?

Hard to say right now with so many options available to Lampard, but here is a guess: Caballero; James, Rudiger, Zouma, Azpilicueta; Jorginho, Kante; Havertz, Mount, Pulisic; Werner.

What do you think the score will be?

I’m hopeful we can get a win , so I’ll go for 2-0 Chelsea.
