How Albion played rated versus Portsmouth.

Jason Steele 7

A home debut at last and capped a comfortable evening with his own moment in the spotlight thanks to a reflex save following a corner.

The Argus:

Jason Molumby 7

One of the more unsung success as he played out of position at right-back and used his competitive nature and sound skills to good use, including when he played out to start the move for that memorable second goal. Could emerge in the same way as Alzate last season.

Joel Veltman 7

He is getting to know about the rigours of the English game and may well have saved a goal by blocking a shot when grounded.

Dan Burn 7

Another who will have enjoyed himself. The defence certainly had some practice defending against corners! He was comfortable on the left of central defence other than when a deflected low cross hit him and almost went in for a freak own goal.

Bernardo 7

A mixed performance but it all ended very happily. Strode forward at will and was involved in several attacking moments, including Gyokeres’ goal, a great chance for Gross, a bad miss early on – and his own first goal for the club with a forceful run to the near post and fine header.

Dale Stephens 7

Unlucky not to join the goal rush when his sweetly struck low drive hit the post. Kept things moving from midfield in smooth style.

Davy Propper 7

Valuable minutes ahead of the back four after his pre-season was interrupted.

The Argus:

Alexis Mac Allister 8

Enjoyed himself in an attacking midfield role and not just because of that perfectly timed run into the box for his goal. His highlight may well have been the dummy which opened up a chance for Gyokeres.

Pascal Gross 7

Should probably have taken one of two first-half chances but played some nice stuff and sent over a perfect corner for Bernardo’s goal.

Alireza Jahanbakhsh 8

Operated on the right and played a huge part in several of his side’s better moments, topped off by a dynamic finish for his third Albion goal after playing a large part earlier in the move.

Viktor Gyokeres 7

Employed as a lone striker and found it tough at times. Maybe should have scored with the first half shot MacGillivray saved. But that could have been Glenn Murray at the end, holding off a defender and turning one way, then the other before finishing.
