Alexis Mac Allister has been backed to hit the Premier League goal trail – after he received another international call.

Graham Potter could restore the Argentina midfielder to his matchday squad at Newcastle tomorrow (2pm, Sky Sports) after seeing him impress in the Carabao Cup.

The head coach is aware of clamour for the club to sign a striker.

But he has offered the clearest message yet that unique financial circumstances this summer make that a big challenge.

Albion are losing a seven-figure sum in revenue every time they play a home league match behind closed doors.

Potter is convinced he can get more goals from his current squad – and that includes Mac Allister.

The Argentina international arrived late in the box to score with a header against Portsmouth.

Potter said: “He attacks the box really well and he is a good finisher.

“As the ball was floating over I thought, ‘Yep, there’s a good chance that’s going to be a goal’. We see that all the time in training.

Jahanbakhsh states his case for Prem action

“He is another one who has probably adapted to a new continent, a new country, a new team, a new club and he is one who will get better and better the longer he is here.

“He has got some good qualities and one of those is attacking the box and scoring.

“Hopefully we can see more of that. Sometimes it’s not just a straight line.

“You can have bumps and dips and issues sometimes we have to work through.

“His character and his personality and his attitude are tremendous so he will be a good player for us.”

South American football chiefs have decided to resume international fixtures in the October window.

Argentina host Ecuador at La Bombonera on October 8 and go to La Paz to take on Bolivia five days later.

Mac Allister was yesterday named in the preliminary squad for those fixtures.

They also have two matches in November, at home to Paraguay and away to Peru.

Involvement against Ecuador would mean a return to the stadium when he shone last season with Boca Juniors.

Mac Allister was left out of Albion’s opening matchday 18 as they hosted Chelsea.

He is among those pushing for inclusion at St James’ Park.
