Tariq Lamptey has been hailed as a “special character” after he became the talk of the Toon.

The right wing-back dazzled for an hour of Albion’s brilliant 3-0 win at Newcastle.

He played a part in two goals for Neal Maupay in the first seven minutes.

Lamptey had gone off with a knock by the time Aaron Connolly curled home a late third after a sumptuous passing move.

Head coach Graham Potter said of the ex-Chelsea youngster: “He’s a special character, really humble, wants to help the team. He’s a great personality. The players love him.

“And then he has got the desire and ability to run in behind and threaten the back line. He is playing against some quite quick players on that side of the pitch and he took a couple of heavy challenges as well.

“He just plays with courage and a freshness.”

Potter felt Albion turned a promising performance first time out at home to Chelsea into points.

He said: “We were disappointed with the Chelsea game and the result but the performance was quite good.

“We wanted to put in another performance.

“I think we did that and it was nice to go away with three points, three goals and a clean sheet.

“It was perfect apart from the red card at the end.”
