Dale Stephens looks set to end his six-year stint at Albion as he nears a move to fellow Premier League side Burnley.

The Argus understands that Stephens met up with the Burnley squad in London yesterday afternoon, ahead of their Carabao Cup tie away at Millwall and had his medical.

Stephens joined Albion on January 30, 2014 from Charlton.

In his time at the club, Stephens has made 223 appearances in all competitions, scoring 15 goals, assisting 13 and been a part of the Albion side that were promoted to the Premier League in the 2016-17 season.

If you just look at Stephens stats in the Premier League, he has made 99 appearances for Albion scoring one goal and getting five assists.

Over his six-and-a-half year spell on the South Coast there have been plenty of highs and lows for the 31-year-old midfielder.

Let’s start with the highs.

The first one was when he opened his account for Albion on April 1 , 2014 in the 3-3 draw against Blackburn, scoring the equaliser in the 88th minute for Oscar Garcia’s side.

The next was the role he played in Albion going 21 league matches unbeaten at the start of the 2015/16 season.

Stephens was an integral part in the middle of the park.

The midfielder played every minute in 20 of the 21 games and only missed the 0-0 draw away to Preston on October 24.

Albion went on to finish third that season, narrowly missing out on automatic promotion, before suffering heartbreak in the playoffs again.

One of Stephens’ biggest achievements with Albion was helping them get promoted to the top-flight for the first time in 34 years.

Stephens played a key role in the promotion, playing in 39 of the 46 matches, scoring two goals and getting three assists.

Another of his highs for Albion was when he scored his first Premier goal in January 2019, in the 2-2 against West Ham at the London Stadium.

The goal came in the 56th minute, when Pascal Gross’ corner was headed to the edge of box and Stephens (pictured) was there to control the ball, before tucking it into the bottom right corner, to fire Albion into the lead.

The Argus:

However, Stephens has had a few lows in his time at the club, with most of that coming through injury.

The midfielder has had injuries over the years, which have prevented him from playing a full season for Albion.

Stephens had a hamstring injury last season, which led him to missing three games in head coach Graham Potter’s first campaign at the club.

In Chris Hughton’s last season at the club, he missed two games against Manchester City away and West Ham at home due to injury.

Stephens has only ever missed games due to one other reason and that is suspension, with red cards costing him.

He received his first red card for Albion on the final day of the 2015-16 season against Middlesbrough, where automatic promotion hung in the balance.

Stephens had made it 1-1 in the 55th minute, but then four minutes received a straight red for a challenge on Gaston Ramirez.

Albion ended up drawing 1-1 with Middlesbrough and lost out on automatic promotion on goal difference.

That wasn’t the only time Stephens saw red, as on November 10, 2018 he was sent off in the 2-1 defeat away to Cardiff.

The score was level at 1-1, before Stephens was red-carded for following through in his challenge on Greg Cunningham.

One of Stephens’ other lows would have been the play-off heartbreak he suffered with Albion in 2015-16.

The even more frustrating thing for Stephens was the fact he was not involved in the two legs of the playoff semi-final against Sheffield Wednesday.

And that was due to him being sent off in the final game of the season against Middlesbrough.

Stephens could get a mixed reaction from fans at times but he has played a huge part in recent seasons.
