How Albion players rated against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup.

JASON STEELE 6

Secure handling of a wet ball. Was left exposed. The one possible question mark raised was whether he might have come for the free-kick on the first goal.

BEN WHITE 6

A busy evening for a defender who thrived on the Saturday, midweek, Saturday rhythm in the Championship. Was obviously out of step with colleagues on that awful first goal, for whatever reason, and it proved costly on an otherwise sound evening.

LEWIS DUNK 6

A generally decent, if not stellar, night although Mata was a bit too clever on that second goal.

DAN BURN 6

Found himself in a position where he had to bring down Mata in the run-up to the first goal. Did a pretty good job on the left of a three, then at left-back.

JOEL VELTMAN 6

Is clearly comfortable on the ball and a clever footballer but is in the unenviable position of, inevitably, having his contribution compared to what Lamptey offers down that side. He will be important at times this season but a testing night here was capped by an impetuous, then unfortunate, part in the final goal.

PASCAL GROSS 7

Some really nice work as he found spaces and got on the ball. Was involved in most of Albion’s best moments. His clever little pass into Mac Allister deserved a more alert response from the intended recipient.

JAYSON MOLUMBY 6

Tenacity and strength to help set up the Trossard chance summed him up. Did not look out of place as Albion moved the ball well at times and will have enjoyed the experience.

BERNARDO 5

Got forward when he could and was halted by a shuffering Fred tackle on one occasion. Moved into midfield as part of a reshuffle in the second half.

ALIREZA JAHANBAKHSH 6

Was an intermittent threat and forced Henderson into his first save before firing over. Looked like he might make something happen before injury cut short his evening.

ALEXIS MAC ALLISTER 6

Was busy and has a lovely touch, such as that which offered Jahanbakhsh a chance. But was imprecise at times too and it was a shame he was not on his toes when Gross looked to have put him through.

VIKTOR GYOKERES 5

A step up for the young striker. Did some good work around the park while not offering any real goal threat. What happens next for him remains to be seen but, if he has learnt and Albion have learnt about him, it was a worthwhile evening.

SUBS

NEAL MAUPAY

Best moment was a perceptive pass inside, after pulling out wide, to put Gross into a good area. Not much menace from him.

LEANDRO TROSSARD

It was not to be against United for him, was it? This time Henderson thwarted his well struck snap shot.

MAX SANDERS

Went on near the end.
