Albion midfielder Jayson Molumby is receiving plenty of plaudits after his impressive display for Republic of Ireland in their 0-0 draw against Wales in the Nations League on Sunday.

Molumby made only his second start for Stephen Kenny’s side and had the tough job of going up against Wales captain for the game, Aaron Ramsey.

Not only did Molumby stand up to the task he shone in the middle of the park, having the highest passing accuracy percentage of any player who played more than 45 minutes with 94 per cent.

The performance saw Molumby named man of the match with the FAI tweeting out the following when announcing the man of the match.

The FAI said: “What another fantastic performance from this man.

“Jayson Molumby is the Ireland man of the match.

“Fully deserved, he leaves everything out on the pitch.”

Ireland fans were also impressed with Molumby and reacted with phrases like ‘should be one of the first names on the teamsheet’ and ‘future Irish captain’.

Former Republic of Ireland midfielder David Meyler is also a big fan of Molumby.

In an interview with Off the Ball about Molumby, Meyler said: “[He was] Excellent. I am really excited by him. Obviously being a midfielder, I am slightly biased towards midfield players.

“I was on the phone to various people yesterday saying ‘I like the look of this fella’.

“He’s big, he’s physical, he gets on the ball and he drives forward with it.

“I think the big thing for him is, in his second international performance, he is going and demanding the ball off the back four at times to try and start the attack and start the play.

“It is very easy to do that when he played for the Under 21s with Stephen [Kenny] but then when you come into the senior team and you’re turning around, and yes Shane Duffy is captain, but he’s saying ‘Give me the ball’.

“I know they have trained and played together at Brighton but when you go into an international set up it is different and I was very encouraged by his performance.

“I think he has a really bright future, so it was really positive and you can see why he got man of the match, he took the game by the scruff of the neck.”

One Person who will have been keeping a close eye on Molumby’s progress with Ireland is Albion head-coach Graham Potter.

Molumby has only started for Albion in the Carabao Cup so far this season but could his performances for Ireland help persuade Potter he is ready for his first Premier League involvement.

The 21-year-old faces tough competition for a place in central midfield from Yves Bissouma, Steven Alzate, Adam Lallana and Davy Propper.

Potter has not just used him in central midfield. In their 4-0 win over Portsmouth in the Carabao Cup last month, Molumby played the full 90 minutes at right back and once again put in an impressive performance When asked about Molumby, Potter did not comment on his plans for him but was excited about the midfielder’s future.

He said: “Jayson has got some fantastic attributes, great qualities.

“He’s a really competitive guy, wants to play football, wants to play for Brighton.

“He’s a really good person to have around and we are excited for him for his future.”

Molumby will be hoping to keep in place in the middle of the park for Ireland tomorrow night as they take on Finland in the Nations League at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium (5pm).

Ireland go into the game against Finland in third place in Group 4 and know they will need a win if they are to have any chance of catching their opponents and Wales.

Molumby will be hoping he can impress on the international stage again and further boost his chances of being involved in Albion’s Premier League squad during this campaign.
