Danny Welbeck admits he is lacking match practice as he prepares to get stuck into Albion life.

What that means in terms of whether he plays at home to West Brom remains to be seen.

The former Manchester United man scored twice in his final five outings for Watford last term but has been on the sidelines since then.

He said: “I’m lacking match practice. I have not played since the back end of last season but I feel fit, I feel strong and hopefully get going with the training, then hopefully I’ll be involved in the games soon.

“I am looking forward to it, feeling ready and can’t wait to get going.”

Welbeck joins players such as Adam Lallana, Vicente, Matt Upson and Wayne Bridge as former internationals who have joined the club in recent seasons.

He can change that by forcing his way back into England plans if he shines at the Amex.

But, when asked, he admitted such thoughts remain at the back of his mind for now.

The 29-year-old said: “Of course there is a lot of competition and there is some great talent, some great players in those positions that England have got to choose from.

“I think, for me, first and foremost it is about playing for Brighton and giving my all.

“My mission is to come here, score goals, to help the team and the club.

“That is the first thing on my mind and anything else that happens after that is a bonus.”

“I have targets and it is something that I will hoping to achieve and surpassing them.

“I want to be out on the pitch playing football and doing the thing I love, so hopefully that all happens.”
