Albion have picked up four points from their opening five games and one area they will be pleased and worried by is the number of shots they are having.

Graham Potter will be pleased that his side are creating chances and that they leading to them racking up efforts.

They have so far had 75 attempts this season, which is the second-most in the Premier League, with only Champions Liverpool (97) at the top.

In terms of shots, the Seagulls average 15 per game, which sees them sit third with Manchester City (16.5) and Liverpool (19.4) above them.

But just where have Albion taken aim from on the pitch.

Just under half (37) took place inside the penalty area, 32 have come from distance and six came in the six-yard box.

Despite all these positives in terms of Albion’s opportunities, when you look deeper you see the downsides.

Despite the efforts they have had and are averaging in each game so far this season.

The Seagulls will be concerned by the fact they are only 4 attempts on target per game.

Albion have scored nine goals in the league, compared to Liverpool, who have scored 13 times.

You might not think hitting the back of the net four more times is a lot at this stage of the season.

But that can be the difference between Potter’s side getting three points as opposed to one.

For example, in their 1-1 draw against Palace on Sunday, the Seagulls registered 20 efforts.

Yet they only hit the target with four, compared to their rivals Palace.

They became the first team since Opta started doing stats in 2003/04 to have one shot and for that to be a penalty.

There were also incidents in that match where Albion could have had a go at goal, rather than tried to overplay the ball.

For example, Neal Maupay had six shots, but only two of them were on target.

One chance stood out when Adam Lallana played the ball through to Maupay and instead of having a pop at goal, he decided to try and cut inside of the defender and saw his effort deflected behind for a corner.

As Alexis Mac Allister proved with his goal, it is better to take aim, as if you do not shoot you will not score.

The Argus:

Maupay has had the fourth most attempts on goal in the division, with 18 and has scored four goals in return.

Whereas, Tottenham forward Heung-Min Son has only had 12 shots and scored seven goals.

This can all change for Albion as the season goes on, have proved against Newcastle they can be clinical and score two goals in seven minutes.

Another positive Albion can take from their efforts is how they nearly scored as more goals from outside the area, as they did in the whole of last season.

In the 2019/20 season, they managed to net four time from distance

This campaign they already scored three through Leandro Trossard against Chelsea, Yves Bissouma at Everton and Mac Allister most recently against Palace.

The Seagulls will hope they can continue to increase the amount of efforts and be ruthless in front of goal.

If they can do that it could end up being a good season.
