Danny Welbeck has been challenged to regain the form which earned him England honours – with Albion's help.

The striker, capped 42 times by his country, is in the running to play some part at home to West Brom today (5.30pm, Sky PPV).

Welbeck, 29, was one of the brightest stars in the English game earlier in his career and Graham Potter believes a new start at the Amex can help him get back towards that level.

Potter reckons that should be the goal for player, club and coaching team alike.

The Albion boss said: “That’s the challenge for me, the club and Danny. He has got a lot of time ahead of him.

“It can happen in a career that, for whatever reason, it doesn’t happen at a club. There could be lots of factors.

“From our perspective we have a guy with incredible experience, a proven quality.

“You don’t play for the clubs he has played for and play for England the times he has without that quality.

“He probably had a bit of a setback in his career but he still wants to play football in this country, still wants to prove he can play at this level.

“He could have done other things, I am pretty sure. So that says something about his character and ambition.

“Then it’s about providing the environment where he can enjoy his football, he can be on the pitch as much as he can.

“We need to find a role for him because he helps the team in and out of possession, and he can threaten in the box. We are delighted with him.”

The most likely option for Welbeck would appear to be a place on the bench against the Baggies.

Lewis Dunk begins a three-game suspension and Alireza Jahanbakhsh (hamstring) is also expected to miss out but Steven Alzate and Alexis Mac Allister are pushing for starts.
