Adam Lallana has revealed how Albion are easing him back to full fitness.

The former Liverpool man has been concentrating on quality rather than quantity of work between matches.

He started to really feel the benefit of that in the days after the 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace.

That should help him be fit and ready for a second successive start when West Brom visit.

It is no secret Lallana’s training regime has been tailored given his lack of playing time with Liverpool after lockdown.

He has started both home league games for the Seagulls so far, including more than 70 minutes during the hugely frustrating contest with Manchester United.

Lallana gave The Argus some insight into how it actually works.

He said: “It’s probably more just dropping out of little bits of the sessions. Maybe do 80% of the session one day, then 100% the next day.

“After the United game, it probably took me three or four days to recover so I was on a different programme to the boys.

“But then, after the Palace game, it has taken me less time to recover so things are definitely progressing.

“They are just managing me as an individual rather than just as another body, which is working.

“I’m feeling fitter by the day, stronger by the day and I know that will happen.

“I’ve been available for every session and doing something every day so it’s great.

“The manager has said I’m here for three years, not three months, so it was important I didn’t want to do everything and take part in every session and do more.

“That’s probably an area of my game I needed to improve on.

“It’s not always about the amount you do, it’s about the quality.

“I have definitely taken bits from Graham (Potter) and the fitness guys here and I’m on board with how they want to manage me.”

Lallana is relishing the buzz of playing again.

But that can also make it harder to control the work he is doing.

He said: “It has been great playing regular football and just a different challenge and there is still plenty more to come.

“I’m still not at the level yet that I want to be performance and fitness wise but I need to be a bit patient with myself and realise I won’t be at the level I want to be at straight away. It is going to take a little bit of time.

“I’ve had it before when you put big pressure on yourself to be at a certain level and you’re just fighting it.

“I am trying to be relaxed at the minute and trust the process and just know that it will come.

“There are signs there that you see as a player that you know it is coming and you are going in the right direction. That’s how I feel.

“I can play 90 minutes no problem. It’s about building it up.

“There’s no need to rush myself into playing 90 minutes.

“It’s about gradually building myself up, rather than having a setback that puts me back two steps, which is three weeks.”

Lallana arrived with an impressive reputation and is arguably the biggest name in the Albion team.

But he does not feel more responsibility on the pitch with the Seagulls than at Liverpool.

He said: “Not at all. I don’t see myself as an individual. I just feel responsible for the team getting results at the end of the day and the team performing well.

“If I can help in any way possible to make that happen, then obviously that’s my job.”

Lallana still recalls the “typical pre-season game” in which West Brom drew 0-0 at the Amex early in September. He believes there can be a home win this time if progress so far is continued.

He added: “We have obviously got a few new players in the building and it was a short pre-season.

“It takes time to click and just knowing each other’s games and the manager’s ideas and getting them across to us.

“We are going to have to be patient at times but I have been happy with the performances from the team, I think the manager has as well.

“It’s just about those fine percentages.

“If we can get a little bit more out of each of us and a little bit more out of the performances, then I think we will see a better points return.”
